The Best Western Moorings Hotel was originally was built as a family home during the 1880’s by Archibald Colville son of David Colville Snr., founder of Colville Iron and Steel Works Co.
The Census of 1891 shows the house was occupied by Archibald, wife Jeannie and their two children as well as the live-in servants. The house was constructed to a palatial standard, with many external stone carvings, elegant windows, beautiful oak panelling and staircases, delightful cornices and brass light fittings. Sadly some of these features have been lost in the interest of progress!
From 1925 to 1971 the house was owned by the Ormiston family. Thomas Ormiston was the local MP from 1931-1935. His grand daughter, Linda Ormiston, is now an internationally renowned Opera Star.
In 1971 the house was converted to be the local Boys Brigade Headquarters and subsequently became a hotel in 1987. The current owner has sympathetically upgraded and extended the building to provide a chic modern hotel in stylish surroundings.
